Hi, My friend has given me his knackered laptop to have a look at as it seems to be riddled with viruses. Basically when I start Firefox all seems well, do a search however and click into a result always opens up some adware crap. Then I get the whole "windows defender has detected X amount of viruses please download this dodgy .exe file to remove them" thing. Tried downloading Avast to do a scan but it keep crashing the browser before the download completes. Does anyone out there know how I can get around this. Any advice appreciated as always.

Back up any personal files and reinstall Windows. It's the only way to be sure if the machine is as messed up as you say.

Thanks for the input guys really appreciated. Browser managed to stay on just long enough to download Malwarebytes and gave it a scan which seems to have done the trick. Downloaded Avast there now and giving it a scan with that. Friend told me a small computer business in the town was gonna charge him €200 to fix it. Damn small town businesses preying on peoples lack of computer knowledge.

    Thanks again
