after installing a fresh install of windows 7 , i did not have access to some files to i did the drill to regain access to those files, after regaining access some files got corrupted and i think i can live with it or maybe try to recover them from linux , but i want to stop this from happening again , i.e. i want to make all my media drive available to all users after any install so this would not happen again , any ideas how i could make that ? , any experiences with a problem like that? , will i be able to recover my data or should i start digging for them in previous backups? , thanks

    Hi,

when reinstalling Windows, you will lose all permissions on the data of your computer. This is due to the way Windows handles user accounts.
These restrictions do normally not apply to external HDDs. So backup your data onto an external HDD before you reinstall Windows.

This begs the question: what ARE you doing for data backup then? Are you just rolling the dice and living on borrowed time, hoping that you won't have some sort of disk failure? Not a good plan.

no , all my important documents are on drop box and DVDs , and i make a backup of my images every 2 month on DVDs , maybe ur pointing to the music ,i synced all my music to my apple tv and i saw alot of articles online about how to recover my music from the apple tv,so to sum up i don't have a backup to all the stuff that are not crtitical to me like ( applications that i can download online / youtube videos , tutorials ) , so i think my plan is enough for me and my resources :D , in other words i can't offer more for my data backup ( like maybe a new hard disk ) , thanks for ur concern
