As the title says, this morning when I booted up my Vista machine I noticed this awkward thing. What can I do to get them back? Do I need to reinstall office?

Did you a use any registry cleaner? It might have messed up the file type association.

I have CCleaner but I don't use it on registry. Only on temp trash.

Looks like you are using Office 2007 and that file is an office 97-2003 file--is that the case?

Do the office 2007 icons look right?

Right-click DESKTOP, choose PERSONALIZE, choose DISPLAY SETTINGS. Change the color depth to something else, hit APPLY, change the color depth back to original setting, hit APPLY.

    Fix?

Some of them are missing in the start-menu. These are shortcuts. The real thing has the appropriate icon.

I'm sorry, I did not make my self clear.

I want you to create a file and do a SAVE AS Word 2007, and then do a SAVE AS Word 97-2003

I am trying to discern if this is a registry issue or a corrupt file issue

Another thought--do you have a secondary account on this computer?

Temporarily create one and tell us if the problem occurs in both places

    1. I don't have another account.
    2. .doc and .docx are the same :(. No icon :(
    3. Just created one and the issue occurs :(.

Guess it is re-install time :(. Will do it tomorrow...

It happened to me too. Unfortunately Vista doesn't have the neat "file type" tab as in XP. :( There is a free small program (filetype?) at sourceforge.net that can help a bit, but it didn't work well for me. I reinstalled Office.

Another idea: maybe try system restore?

Check if the file type association is right.
Control panel > Default programs > Associate a file type....
Navigate to .doc and .docx to see if the association is set right.
At the last you can repair office 2007 installation.

Everything is set to office. If I double click on, draft1, it will open with word 2007. The icon is gone and it shows office is broken :(. I will fully reinstall Vista because I want to be sure I eliminate this bug. Its not very nice when you are in a folder with documents and you see no icons yet for description it says Microsoft Word Document.

Did not try system restore but I tried restoring my office icons to their previous versions. I thought you guys know some Vista tips for random errors like this :). Format it is then....

    Cheers for the input lads.

    try an office repair first

Open Word, click on the orb at the top, choose RESOURCES, choose OFFICE DIAGNOSTICS

You can also run a chkdsk at the command prompt "chkdsk /f"
