Ok...running Win7 64 Bit Ult on system below.
It starts extremely fast and finishes in about about 25 sec.
Prob is...just before process completion a baloon pops up and is gone so fast I cant pause the screen or read what it says.
I just see it appear and disssappear for less tha a tenth of a sec I am sure....
Is there any way to step through the boot process one piece at a time to see what is causing this?

For something like that, I would suggest getting a digital camera or video recorder pointed at the screen. Play it back in slow motion.
-
I'm not sure how to do that, but have you checked the Event Viewer? It generally reports all events that are marked by those "balloons" and you can tell exactly where the event is because it should be near the time you boot.
-
I am sure that in a previous version of Windows...or...maybe DOS.....there was a way of monitoring the boot by allowing each command as it progressed.
Am I wrong? -
No, you are right, in Windows Me and earlier, you could run a step by step, but your recollection is only partial. What you were stepping through were the DOS configuration settings. Once you implemented the last step (the windows shell), it was off to the races.
I wonder if AUTORUNS would reveal the secret popup? It sounds like a logon script. Was this a clean install or upgrade. -
Clean install....then I tweaked it somewhat...well actually still fooling with it...
System flies but I just cannot find the reason for the popup...too fast..video is a great idea though. -

other than that, you could check the event logs for any boot log information. it has in detail what happens normally.
one random guess (unlikely but random guesses are always fun). on an external screen, changing the resolution can sometimes show some onscreeninfo (like "not the preferred res" or "adjusting ..." or something).
now yours is the internal screen i guess? still. does it look like a windows message box, or something that maybe could come from some hw? -
Ohhhhhh... maybe because I switch between my 22 inch external and the laptop screen a few times a day and it is an automatic switch...hmmm...
I will have to see if this only does this when the ext screen is not connected. -
Yeah, check the Event viewer.
You can step through the boot process as it loads all its kernel drivers, but after that, it's off to the races.
