I recently purchased a external hard drive enclosure i-rocks IR-9300-BK and when I plug this into my notebook a Asus M51 Sn it shows up and then proceeds to have to disticnt but interrelated problems.
Problem 1: The transfer speed is really slow/random it shows sometimes somewhere between 400+ hours for a file and if you try and transfer it again like 30 min.
Problem 2: While in use it randomly disconnets the drive while plugged in and kills any files being used off the drive that is open.
I think this maybe an issue with windows vista. As I have tried it on my mother xp notebook and there are no problems. Any help would be appreciated.

The_Observer 9262 is the best:)
I had this problem before and reasons were:
1)The chip was faulty.Get an oxford based chip.
2)The speed could be USB 1.1. -
Im not sure what number one is from what you listed but how would i find out about number two on your list. Thank you for your quick response

Not sure....but when I used to plug a USB 2.0 device into a USB1.1 port...the device used to say that it is running at a reduced speed and will work well when plugged into a USB 2.0 socket....eg. IPOD

Yes, this sounds more like a hardware/driver issue than with the OS. Granted, Vista had known USB file transfer issues, those were supposedly fixed over several updates. Make sure your Vista is fully up to date.
Also, check for updated chipset drivers. -
Have you installed SP1 for Vista?
-
Yes I have on my notebook I just installed the download for the chipset it helped with the disconnecting but I guess having slow speeds is a vista issue and not a chipset thing then
-
Is Vista up to date with SP1 and all other patches? This is crucial because there are performance enhancements in those updates.

I've had i-Rocks stuff before and it's pretty cheap/crap. If none of the other suggestions help, get another enclosure. Get one that's made by a better-known name.
