hi guys, so something very weird is going on with my laptop right now (im on a desktop right now). so here's some background info:

so i'm playing some games when all of a sudden the game freezes and i try and get back to my desktop but it doesnt work. so i decided to hold my power button and restart that way. i figured that i've done this before and it was fine so why not this time?
so after i force the computer to shut down i power it back up again and i get that black screen where it asks if you want to "Start in Safe Mode", "Last Good Configuration", or "Start Windows Normally". so i've tried all three now and all get to the part where the windows xp logo is on screen and the blue bars are going from left to right. normal right? well thats where i get stuck. i keep getting this blue screen after that and i cant get past it no matter which option i choose.

so what can i do to fix this problem? and what can i do to prevent this from happening again?

any help is greatly appreciated and rep will be given where rep is deserved. thanks! :)

In general my advice in this type of situation is to perform a repair install, as it is very easy and is an opportunity to clean up your system files and apply the latest drivers. The process takes as long as a clean install though, so it is not the quickest solution. (A repair install keeps all your files intact and only reinstalls the system files.)

If you are not up for a repair installation you could first log into the Recovery Console via the XP cd:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058

Read through the above Microsoft page to see the different commands available in the recovery console. Due to this problem happening after shutting down improperly I would first suggest CHKDSK with the appropriate options set:

FIXBOOT may also be helpful, though I personally have never used it (since I favor the repair install):

I think some installation files became corrupt,so if I were you I would do a repair installation from the XP cd.It would fix it IMHO.

ok thx, looks like i'll have to try and find my windows xp cd then :(

    how do i run CHKDSK?

will update when i have done a repair install

    oh and for wirelessman:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Disable or uninstall any antivirus, disk defragmentation or disk utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

    Technical Information:

    *** STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x8AA09380, 0xC0000102, 0X00000000)

You can run CHKDSK via the recovery console. Istructions for getting into the recovery console are on the Microsoft site I linked to. The useful place to start reading is after: " Starting the Windows Recovery Console".

However, you should not need to do this if you do the repair installation, so don't worry about it :) .

Here are instructions for doing the repair install (thanks yet again flipfire for posting this):

Had this happened before and ended up re-installing the whole system. Apparently there was a process going on in the background and turning it off fried the whole thing. This is one of XP's achilles heel
