Over the last couple of days I noticed that when I wake up my laptop is in hibernation mode even though I left it in sleep mode. Well I made a custom log from last night and I now know what is bringing my laptop out of sleep and it has something to do with windows update agent but I have auto updates disabled, I am including a snip from the start of last nights log when the computer was brought out of sleep to see if anyone has any ideas on how to disable, or even find where this application is located. Also I have been checking it for the last couple of nights and it brings my laptop out of sleep exactly 2 hours after I put it to sleep so it is not set up to come on at a certain time.

Also what ever is waking it from sleep only keeps it awake for 15 seconds but when its finished it puts the computer in hibernate instead of back in sleep mode. Also this seems to only happen of a night because I leave it in sleep mode during the day and there is never any events during the day.

Any ideas because I have checked everything including all the window items in task scheduler.

I think may be hybrid sleep in action. From Windows help and how to

Or you have a power managment profile set to hibernate after 2 hours of inactivity. In Vista I believe those are active even in sleep mode.

No hybrid sleep is disabeld and it only does this in the night, of day time I leave it in sleep for 8 hours every day with no hibernating or events for the 8 hours.

I assume in the day and the night it is on AC power in both cases, right?

This is a wild ass shot in the dark. Could it be at night you have it plugged into an AC outlet that is switched? I lived in a house once where several of the bedroom outlets had the TOP outlet tied to a wall switch by the door. You plugged lamps into those.

In Device Manager check the power options of each device and make sure that "Allow this device to wake up the computer" is not selected.

do you have auto updates set to time. mine was set to 3am gmt and at that time each night if in sleep mode would wake up and then go into hibernation.
i switched of auto updates and the problem ended.
but i was using xp pro and not vista.

It is plugged in day and night and the plug is always hot.

No devices with power management options are set to wake.

    Updates totally disabled.

Thanks, I just can't figure it out.

Still puzzled here, I don't like to shutdown do you guys think that whatever is bringing it out of sleep of a night would also bring it out of hibernation?

Yes I think that does identify it. It is Windows Update. Now the question is WHY is it doing that AFTER you have turned off Windows Update???? Are you SURE it is turned off? What about your antivirus, or anti spyware. Oh wait what about Defender????? Is it enabled, cold it be the thing trying to "phone home"?

You said it is always exactly 2 hours after sleep, not at a particular time of night, right?

Yes Windows update is set to never check for updates.

It did it again last night 2 hours after I put it to sleep and then put the PC into hibernate, left it on sleep all day and nothing. What ever is going on only happens of a night and the event log for this time still starts and ends with "WindowsUpdateClient".

Any ideas because this is really pissing me off knowing that vista is waking my computer and then going into task scheduler, and resource publication, sending and receiving from the INTERNET, and then going back to windows update client and finally putting my computer in hibernation.

BTW the whole process only lasts for 13 - 15 seconds. Its almost like windows is set to send information from my computer back to Microsoft.

Try disabling your local area connection and your wireless connection before putting the notebook to sleep one night. I worked with a customer before who had a bizarre wake-on-LAN problem that ended up needing a BIOS update, but disabling your LAN and wireless will tell us for certain if that's the problem.

I fixed it, even though windows updates were disabled in the control panel the windows update service by default was set to automatic. I set it to manual so I can still pick through the updates and then restart or stop the service via task manager and all is well.

I had no events logged last night and my laptop stayed in sleep mode all night long, I think that Microsoft really is trying to mess with PC's without the user knowing it unless they are smart enough to check their event viewer.

I'm glad to see that you nailed the problem down. The event log does have its occasional uses!

However, it is disconcerting to see that Windows Update can wake up a hibernating computer. However, are you using Vista's hybrid sleep, which is only a semi-hibernation. Maybe I'm lucky because I have Windows Update set to check for updates at 10.00am.
