    Sony Notebook Computer Model PCG-6BIL 2004
    Within the past two days I reinstalled Windows XP Professional after reformatting the 60 GB HD in two partitions. The installation was normal except for two problems.
    During booth up there are two Systems that show up and if I pick the second one I get the message
    “Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt :<Windows root>system32\hal.dll. Please re-install a copy of the above file.”
    I would like to get rid of this second system since the first one boots up normally if I pick it.

    The second problem is that I can no longer get on the internet. I have DSL fiber optic and although I have 1394 Connection established and a connection shown Internet Explorer cannot find the Server and I get the message that the page cannot be displayed.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Did you reformat (erase) the old OS?

    you can change it under System properties

    My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Start & Recovery > Settings

    Under it select the OS you want to boot first or which working and set it as default , then Edit the hidden Boot.ini file in you root partition

    The boot.ini should look like this and remove the entries which you don't want ( Always take a full system backup before you messup the system files :D )

    Code:
    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

    The HD was reformatted with two partions before XP was installed.

    Doing what vinumsv suggested should get rid of that extra boot entry. As far as your internet goes, the 1394 is for firewire and likely doesn't have anything to do with getting connected. Do you have the proper drivers installed for your network card? If you right click on My Computer and select properties and choose the Hardware tab I believe, there should be a button that says Device Manager, click that and a list of a bunch of things should come up. Look for something that says Network Adapters and tell us what it lists. BTW, I am assuming it is wireless, so what kind of card do you have?

    The suggestion from vinumsv really worked. Thanks.

    The problem with the internet is seems to be that under Other Devices the following are missing
    Ethernet Controller
    Multimedia Audio Controller
    PCI Modem
    SM Bus Controller
    Univeral Serial Buss Controller
    Video Controller

    How would I get these since the laptop does not have internet access?

    Sony Should have provided a Driver CD/DVD mate , just use it to install them but if you don't have one then you could use your friends system to download the drivers.

    I reformatted the HD and reinstalled XP. I apparently lost drivers in the process since in the Device Manager I do not have:

    Ethernet Controller
    Multimedia Audio Controller
    Network Controller
    SM Bus Controller
    Universal Bus Controller
    Video Controller

    The computer is wireless but I do not know which card is installed. It is wire directly to the internet at this point so wireless is disablled.

    I went to Sony for on line support. They provided the driver and I have installed it. Everything works! I wish to thank everyone for all the help.
