    Hi All,

My wife has a brnad new Sony Vaio with Windows 7 installed. It has every update available on it but it has failed to fix the below problem:

When we boot the OS, it seems as if it has all booted OK, then we goto open almost any application and it will not load up... then after 15-20 mins the apps all load up and the pc runs just fine from then on.... Any clues?

I did not make a recovery disk (now finding out I should have).

    Tom

I would recommend making recovery discs asap. Sounds like you'll have to wait the necessary 15-20 min first, but this should be done right away. May take several attempts because it's very picky while burning the discs.

You should be able to restore the computer to factory settings by pressing f10 during boot up, while the VAIO splash screen appears. If you have an ASSIST button, you can press that while the computer is off and it should open the recovery center. You should also be able to initiate a complete system restore from VAIO Care.

From VAIO Care, you can also run the various hardware diagnostics to see what kind of problems there might be.

Since it's brand new, I'd just back up the data and do a OS reinstall.

You may even look into the clean install process.

When you reply, please include the complete model number for her VAIO.

    Hey,
I wonder if you have a virus or malware of some kind. You should definitely run Microsoft safety scanner and system sweep.
Here are links to create recovery disks too (do that first).
And security essentials for when you are back up and running.

Or, some network share has been setup that can't be found with the current network.

CIFS shares typically timeout in multiples of 9 minutes (if not changed by the sysadmins).

Was this vaio ever on a corporate or other kind of AD network and if so, were login scripts in use?

You will have to make some recovery disks and after you have to make a fresh install of windows 7 with the utilities you use and in the correct order this makes miracoles because sony sometimes install all crap on the systems :p
