I just got done chatting with a customer service rep from Sony. I asked if they will be issuing free Windows 7 updates to recently purchased computers. She stated that sony will not support Windows 7, at all. No drivers or updates. Is she crazy or is this true?

I'd say, she meant there's no support or driver for your current laptop which make sense.

I am running Windows 7 RC 64-bit with no problems in my Sony Vaio FZ-190E.
Sony will release Windows 7 drivers once the final version of the OS is out.
If you want to try Win 7, grab the Vista drivers for your model from Sony support site.

With the exception of memory stick readers, Sony computer hardware is remarkably generic. I'd be surprised if the required drives aren't already included in the Win7 beta builds.

The last place I would look for tech advice is customer service.

Case in point, a CSR once told me that a blu-ray disc is a normal DVD with blue ink.

They will work on the drivers and support when its "Properly" released.

But i doubt they have any interest with w7 rc'.

I installed W7 beta on this Sony (32 bit) and it installed all the drivers except for the bluetooth. I had to manually install the vista driver from eSupport. Everything is working well.

I don't think Win7 installs the necessary drivers for Sony laptop fn key functionality. You have to manually install the Sony firmware extension driver/ Sony notebook control device driver for the fn keys to control the display brightness.

That could be true as I never use the Fn key. :p

EDIT: I just tried it and they work just fine????

Some makers put their Fn key support in the BIOS where it belongs. Others depend on a keyboard driver utililty.

Sony is very bad when it comes to providing support for new technology for their proprietary hardware. This is one of my main reasons for not buying another Sony. Caveat Emptor.
