I have been having problems not being able to update vista. It tries to but then most all of the updates fail and it takes forever to shutdown because of it configuring and restarting etc. . So I called the sony tech. and he says if I have an antivirus(i do--Avira) and firewall (i do--Comodo) then there is no need for me to update vista just turn off the auto update and leave it alone???
Is this true or am I going to have to buy a vista disc to reinstall???

You should always keep windows up to date, there are more than just security fixes that are useful. Do sony not provide anyway to reload the OS?
-
I guess not. I didn't get anything from them. This has been a problem from the start. it has never updated successfully and I tried when I had very few things on the computer. heck other than mpegs, pics, itunes and what not there really isn't much on it now either.

There is normally a way to restore from a hidden partition on most notebooks shipped without restore media.
-
they do provide the hidden partition, just like any other companies which do not provide DVDs.
-
I figured if I was going to have to resort to doing that I might as well buy a vista disc then I would have it and none of the bloatware.
-
its not such a bad idea, there are some updates that mess around and slow my work down, i leave the update on but i let windows ask me before download and install.

you don't have to spend any money on a vista disc as you can download one legally. And you can use the key either on the bottom of your laptop or the one you have installed right now.
Here's the 32 bit Vista download
Here's the 64 bit Vista download
Heres are a couple of guides that may work for you
Clean install with NO ACTIVATION
heres a guide that'll let you burn discs using the hidden partition -
You should've asked the Sony Tech to explain himself/herself in full detail why to not let Vista update itself. Then when they were finished asked to speak to a supervisor and repeat to them what the tech told you. Because for one I'm very curious their reasoning behind this, and 2 if the tech is giving bad advice someone higher up need to be notified so he doesn't give others bad advice too.

You can make your own recovery dvd's. You can also refer the link in my sig. to create your own vista install dvd.

Thanks for all of the replys and links. I am going to look at them at try to get vista using my key thanks. I did ask the tech a couple of times and he said that (here is a pretty close quote from him) "most all of the updates are for security and if you have a anti virus and a firewall you don't need the vista security measures so if I am not having any other problems just turn the auto updates off and don't worry about it because this particular windows is malfunction and we know what cause it so we turn it off" he was foreign see! He gave me a reference number for the problem and I figured I would call back and talk with someone else this coming week.

Sony will also tell you that Michael Jackson was the first man to walk the moon
Techies will try to get rid of you as soon as possible, giving a silly advice like that. The only time they care if when something is broken or not functioning at all -
