    Well my sound stopped working.
If I plug in earphones I can hear sound, but if I unplug them no sound plays on the laptop speakers.
Tried rebooting, and the shutdown and start up sound works, but nothing in windows.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

There is a chance--a chance, it is a hardware problem and the jack is damaged. When you plug in a headphone, the jack is supposed to shut off the speakers, and sometimes this function is damaged.

However, there is also a chance that you have a driver issue. Download the latest driver, if not from Asus, then the sound chip maker...

    Install reboot

My niece had a dell 1525 and the sound disappeared after a windows update, but the updated driver restored the sound. I can only assume the update and old driver were not compatible

This sounds like a driver issue. With the stock vista drivers, auto switching between headphones/ speakers is not possible. You have to close the music player and then reopen.
