Hey guys,
Are there any programs out there that I can use as a filter to modify the sound of another program? For example, if I were running a game, and I don't want a certain frequency (say, the sound of a certain gun fire) to blast out my ears, I want to drop that frequency range by a few db while keeping the others constant. Any program I can do this with?
Thanks

Eh, chances are you end up dropping sounds you didn't want to drop. I bet there are more sounds in the same frequency range of that one you want to drop.

I actually tried to look for a similar software before for use with something else. Considering what you need it for, with filtering/modifying sounds in real-time, you may want to checkout this software: EchoFilter Digital Audio Filtering Software.
I have not tried this software yet, but it seems to be able to filter various signals using your soundcard. It says it can also remove noise and unwanted sounds from an audio signal. However, you may want to check the version compatibility as it's a pretty dated software. The actual developer site is here. There's a trial version available.
Hope it helps. -

Some drivers have it built in. I know that the beats audio control panel on my Envy has an equalizer in it, which has different settings per output (so the HDMI out can be full, but laptop speakers and headphones can drop the bass). Check the site for your audio chipset drivers, see if they have a set that isn't the one that shipped with your laptop, and may have an equalizer. Driver-level is the only way to do it with Win7's driver models.

My sound card driver does let me change the EQ, but I can only choose from presets (Jazz, Rock, Classical, etc). I really need a customizable x-band EQ.
