I used to rely on Adaware, Spybot and Spyware Doctor (Google Pack version). Only Spybot is Vista compatible and it's the one I felt was the least robust.

Know of any other free Spyware programs that are Vista ready? I use Spywareblaster, but it's a blocker not a cleaner. Need another one to help Spybot.

Maybe, but I'm spoiled by free ones like Adaware and Spybot.
And it wouldn't be so bad to pay for the software but they want you to pay each year to keep it active and get updates. $30 per year is a lot.

If I were you, I'd just surf carefully, use Firefox + Adblock, AVG, and a good firewall. With the aforementioned techniques, it's virtually impossible to get either spyware or viruses.

Actually, Spyware Doctor (non Google Pack version anyway) is Vista ready.

See this for what I am using on Vista right now.

Thanks, I'll try this download version and let you know. The free version provided with Google Pack will not install in Vista.

couldn't you just leave Windows Defender on in addition to whatever antivirus you're currently using? while the two would provide some overlap, the antivirus will make up for whatever deficiencies that Defender has.

I use Spybot S&D and Spywareblaster (javacoolsoftware.com). Both don't run in the background and still provide really good protection.

Webroot Spy Sweeper is the ****tiest thing I've seen, it provides a false sense of security AFAIK and uses a lot of system resources.

You could. And while I would leave Windows Defender before I would leave Window Firewall, I have serious reservations about leaving anything that has deficiencies that need to be made up for.

This PC Tools version installed and ran but while it detected things it wanted $ to remove them. And yet the PC Tools version in Google Pack will not work with Vista. Sounds like a Google problem.

My experience is that it takes an anti-virus (like AVG), a blocker(like Spywareblaster) and a cleaner (like Adaware or Spybot). I just don't think Spybot is 100% effective becasue when I ran it and then ran Adaware I always found a few more issues.

Yes, but if it blocks in real time then there is no need to remove, and if something does happen to be found, SpyBot SD can probably remove it. Clean house, then stay that way.

#1 dont be stupid and goes to scary places and dont open email you DONT need. I think all of this software is NOT needed as long as your smart.

Everytime I read and article or whatever that makes me think "I just might have something"? I run a few of these and I have NONE.

Oh and IE7 under Vista runs in a sandbox making it more secure than FF>

While running in protected mode could theoretically provide additional safety for IE7 over, say IE6, I personally don't run FireFox solely for the additional security; rather, I run FireFox for additional functionality. IE7 is playing a catch-up game with FireFox, with me-too features that FireFox has had for some time, and in fact, IE7 implemented many of them almost identically to the way they are implemented in FireFox, although not as well developed or thought out as they were implemented in FireFox. IE7 is your parent's Accord; it runs, it's not flashy, and you cannot expect anything other than basic transportation from it, but it will get you from here to there and back, if you don't die of boredom along the way.

Hmmm.. I'll try again but mine would not run past a certain point and when I googled it others reported the same problem.
