Somehow, the start folder (or a copy of it) is now showing up on my desktop, and I can't delete it. What am I doing wrong, and how can I get it off my desktop?? Thanks.

Try Getting Simple File Shredder HERE

Then right cick, File Shedder and do a Secure delete. It may work to erase the folder.

Do you mean it's showing up as a bar docked to the side of your screen? If so right click on any empty space on it and select 'tool bars' and uncheck it.

No, the folder is just on the Desktop, below a shortcut that I did create.

What OS are you running on, and what exactly did you do when you created that other shortcut you mentioned it was sitting under?

As a quickie fix, try doing a system restore to a point prior to the time the start folder showed up on the desktop.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I didn't have to use the File Shredder. After running CCleaner and a couple of reboots, the folder was no longer on the desktop. It makes no sense, but it's not there any longer. The other shortcuts I created I just dragged/dropped the icon from the address bar of the browser onto the desktop.

As an aside, I really miss my old Dell with XP. This new HP I have is quirky, and I don't know how much of it is Vista or how much is the pc. Thanks again.

Vista is not XP. If you are trying to make it so or expecting it to be so you will be confused, frustrated, and disappointed. Windows 7 will be more Vista-like than XP-like, so get used to it.
