I click start and type "RJ45" in the search box. I get "No Items match your search". But if I click on the "See more results", it INSTANTLY gives a list of three files that begin with "RJ45". Obviously these files exist in a folder that is being indexed or they wouldn't show right away in the "See more Results" view. So what is going on? The files in question are in a sub folder of the "My Documents" folder. The My documents folder is part of the "Documents Library". If I take "My Documents" out of the Documents Library, the RJ45 files show up in the initial start menu search. If I move the folder back to the library, I get the "No items match..." and they show up when I click the "See more results".
Anyone else seen this? I am including a link to another forum with discussion of this issue.

Strange...
Open the Index Control panel, click on modify, and ensure that your document is well check to be indexed. And that the file extension is being set to index the internal content of the document. If these are not check, do so, and allow a few minutes to index (more files you have in that folder, to more time it will take).
If the above doesn't solve your problem:
Open the Index Control Panel, click on the "advance" button, and then click on "rebuild". Leave the computer ON and idle for a some moment (if you are packed with files, you may need to leave it overnight to finish indexing).
If that still doesn't work, try to re-install Windows 7 Search Module (very easy).
Open "Programs and Features" panel from the control panel, and click on "Turn Windows feature on or off" on the side column. A small panel will open, scroll down to "Windows Search" (NOT TO BE CONFUSED with Index Service - do not check that one, as this is XP crappy and slow search engine), and uncheck the box and click on the OK button. You will need to restart your computer to finish the uninstall. Once done, go back to the very same panel, and check the box once more, and you will need to restart your computer to finish the installation. Once all done, leave your computer on idle for a moment (if you are packed with data - leave it overnight) to allow Windows to index all your files again. -

Goodbytes this isn't an index issue.
The file is indexed or it wouldn't appear INSTANTLY when I click on the "See More Results" button. I had already checked to make sure the folder is being indexed, it is in the "my documents" folder. And the content filter is unimportant as I am searching for the name of the file. (But to your point, the file extension is in the list.)
Taking the "my documents" folder out of the documents library makes the search show the file in the start menu search window. Put the "my documents" folder back in the documents library and the file only shows after you hit the "see more results" button. The behavior switches INSTANTLY when the folder is moved into or out of the library. If this were an indexing issue it would take a while to manifest itself after the index was updated.
Take a look at the link I provided and read through the thread. Other folks are describing the exact same phenomena.
It is really strange.

I thought the Start menu only shows index content only.. you have to do "show more results" to access non-index areas.

Try this. Click start | Search then type just the letter a and hit enter. You should get a bunch of results in the initial display. Then click "show more results" notice that the drive does not start thrashing as it would if it were now searching the non indexed areas.
I think the only way to search non indexed ares is to then click the custom button at the bottom of the "see more results" display page.
Check this thread and scroll to message number 10.

I don't know if the search options in the "folder option" panel search affect the start menu.. but try to play with those (you never know).
I would still try to reinstall the search module.. just in case it's some bug on the index or something. -
You know, it did this the first time I tried.
I typed a name I knew of a folder and file in my system.
At first it returned just the files. Then I gave it a few more seconds and then the folders populated the search result.
But it didn't return the result instantly. I figure that is because it is searching through thousands of files.
But I think your problem is that the file doesn't show up at all? It is hard to discern from your post. -

If I remove the "My Documents folder" from the "Document Library" those same seven files show up INSTANTLY in the start menu search window. Add the "My Documents" folder back and the strange behavior returns.
The link I posted details all of this and apparently it has been going on since the beta and persists still for some folks.

I did change my background to that of a Ducanti. You think that was the solution?
