Hi there, I have just recieved my new XPS 1530 today with T9300 processor and well, I'm trying to get the startup times down as they seem to be a little long considering the spec of the system and there being no additional programs installed other than the ones coming with Dell - most of which I'v uninstalled or disabled at startup through msconfig. And while looking on msconfig I noticed two additional settings, namely the timeout which was default at 30 seconds and the number of processors to be used on boot up which was default at 1 (but has an option for 2. So basically I'm asking what does timeout do, and can it be lowered since it appears that 30 second timeoout is adding 30 seconds to my boot times but for what? And does having a dual core count as having two processors and does setting it to two increase boot up speed. Thanks, hope you can help.

Timeout lists the additional boot options (like in dual booting). This doesn't apply to you. It doesn't add any time if you just use one OS.

    Midnight Soul:

I think I might get the support of the others here in stating the best you can do is a Clean Install followed by a good system optimization and tweaking. I have two articles below, Dell Clean Install and NBR Tips and Tweaks Guide which will do that for you.

Here is also the Vista Start Up Time poll which may assist.

Your not talking about waking up from sleep right?

Its hard to believe, even an SSD couldnt get those boot times on Vista

    45-50 seconds

Reformatted a week or so ago, have SP1, some tweaks, WiFi on, Kaspersky on, no password logon, no mouse just trackpad, some games, office, adobe, just defragged. I usually have password logon on but disabled it for the test. I'm ok with this time :)

Not even a completely fresh Windows XP install achieves 15 seconds. How did you? Are you using a notebook?

I'd like to know what startup times for XP SP1 on current hardware for that time were? I sure as heck don't remember and I was not much of a tweaker back then. I didn't know squat compared to now. I tried Googling it but didn't really find anything. Anyone know?

are you in mars or some outer space planet where 1hour doesn't equal 60minutes, 1minute doesn't equal 60 second and don't have gravity so your HDD can spin super fast? ;) :D

mines ~22 sec. Go on youtube and look for eeepc xp boot or something of that sort. Its possible to get quick boot with SSD and very stripped downed xp. But saying that I havn't been able to get sub 40 on any regular desktop i have had.

For full Vista boot from scratch to fully loaded sys tray my desktop takes 45 seconds...unfortunately 15 of those are the unbearably slow Intel POST.

Vista is the slowest botting OS I have used to date; and thats saying a lot. Mine is about 2 minutes before hitting the desktop.

anyone saying u can't boot xp in 15 seconds is living in a dream world. i installed an nlite version of xp on a standard 5400 hd with a 1.5ghz core duo which booted in 22seconds. as soon as i install my diy ssd i expect 15seconds to be easily achieveable!
