Not sure if this is the right place to post. I have an Acer 5920G that used to boot up incredibly fast. I clean it out using "CC Cleaner" regularly and have defragged it recently.

For some reason, the bootup takes forever. It is as if it's loading something up in the background that is holding up the ability to start programs. I.e., it's really fast to get to the desktop screen, but when I select a program to run, it takes about 2 minutes before it executes (any program).

Once it finally starts the application (say Internet Explorer), everything is fine.

I'm guessing there is something installed on startup or possibly a Windows upgrade that didn't go properly (maybe my wife installed something or the computer crashed during an update).

What can I do to check this?

    Thanks!

run msconfig and click on startup then untick everything then re-start if it works fine stare re-ticking then one at a time until you find the fauty one.

Is it safe to just untick all?

I might disable your virus checker , just dont go on the internet, till you re-enable it but otherwise it should be fine , I have done this dozens of times on many notebooks without any problems.

what program do you use to defrag? i had similar experiences with O&O Defrag (thats just my experience, don't bash me) after using it to defrag my disks. and don't use CCleaner for the registry, just leave the registry alone.

Go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer>Custom Logs>Administrative Events to see what happened.

Ended up uninstalling Comodo, Avast and Super anti spyware and installing Microsoft Security Essentials and reenabling the Vista Firewall. Computer loads up lightening fast now.

However, in the Startup section of MSConfig, it still shows two versions of Comodo in it and now two boxes for "Microsoft Operating System", both are checked.

Is there a way to clean this up, i.e., delete the two Comodo's for instance (the files don't exist so I don't want the startup looking for them) and getting just one Operating system checked?

I know I could uncheck them, just don't understand why they're there!!

LOL... You know SAS and Comodo and Avast = Take out a lot of resources.
Avast is quite heavy. SAS loading is slow like hell. Comodo is not a Primary Vital Protection.
Glad now, you're using MSE and Windows Firewall. This 2 already good. Not need for Comodo(windows firewall already OK) and Avast!(no need since MSE is gay) as well as SAS(you need to disable it's auto startup if you wanna use it).

    Lemme guess......you're running Vista, right?

I had the same problem with my Acer 751 Netbook. I got it back in August, and the past month or so, the hard drive thrashes for 5 min. or longer after boot-up. It was preposterous.

    Solution: Windows 7.

I am very impressed with the drastic performance increase of 7 over Vista. It is night and day.

I'd do a clean install of 7 ASAP.

    Sounds like a DHCP issue.
Try to set an IP address statically(manually) and reboot.
    Hope this helps :p

pretty sure he has already solved his problem--not sure why people are still giving advice.

fwiw, you had to antivirus programs both with real time monitoring...a surefire cause of trouble.

To remove those settings in MSCONFIG, recheck them, reboot, download autoruns from sysinternals and then check for the settings there, right click, choose delete.

Be careful with autoruns...it is useful, but powerful
