    Hey guys,

Got a new laptop so I installed steam again. However when I tried to open it, an update box opens but no progress. Then the following error pops up:

Steam.exe (main exception): To run steam, you first must be connected to the Internet

The issue is I AM connected to the internet. Any advice on how to get around this? I tried resetting my laptop and router, no help.

    Thanks.

edit: running Windows 7 64bit if that makes a difference

Have you checked to see if there is a firewall blocking steam?

Try Safe Mode with Networking, if I remember right I had the same issue a long time ago but with Vista Ultimate on a new laptop.

Yeah checked the Firewall and ensured that Steam was allowed. Will try Safe mode when I get home! Thanks for the replies.
One thing I just realised, at home (since I share my internet connection with my office) I'm not able to use torrents. So I assume something is blocked. Will this interfere with Steam?
