Hello! Does anyone know how I can stop the notification on my laptop saying I need to update my system to 8.1? First off, I'm contented with 8. So, there's no need to update it to 8.1. Second, it's very annoying. When I'm using my laptop, it suddenly pops out causing my pc to lag for almost 5 minutes or longer. Btw, I'm always connected to internet.

All the more reason to update to 8.1.

If I recall correctly, Win 8 is no longer receiving patches and updates (and hasn't for quite some time) - you may very well be unpatched for the recent WannaCry vulnerability, in which case I suspect you won't be content with Win 8 if you fall victim to a ransomware attack.

Exactly. Also 8.1 is like a service pack to Windows 8 that fixes bugs and adds features to make Windows 8 more tolerable

I hated Windows 8 and found Windows 8.1 bearable - fixed a lot of the strange desktop issues. Installed Classic Shell on top and I now prefer it to Windows 7. Nuked my Win10 install recently and went back to Windows 8.1 - seems to be the sweet spot. Basically: Upgrade to 8.1.

side note: if you do install 8.1, you'll have to install all the critical 8.0 updates beforehand and you'll have to be signed into the windows store. you can't upgrade from 8 > 8.1 without being signed into the windows store (which is ridiculous).

I didn't use 8 and imagine I would have disliked it as much as everyone else, but I agree with you that 8.1 with Classic Shell is pretty good. It's very close to 7 with various improvements under the surface. My biggest issue is probably not being able to use OneDrive without connecting a MS account, so for now I just have my OneDrive mapped as a network drive.

I don't remember exactly all. But you can use a Win 8.1 ISO with a generic key. Finish Install, and then enter your valid key. Remember finding - writing down your Windoze key before you start. I have never used the ordinary crippled way for this "Scam" upgrade.
