I have vista home premium 32 bit on my dell M1530, and for some reason starting yesterday it does a very strange thing when I plug my external monitor into the VGA port. Previously, my laptop's display wouldn't change a bit, and the desktop would be extended onto the other monitor. Now, without me changing a single setting, my laptop display goes blank as soon as I plug in the monitor and the external screen says something about "not recommended mode". Is there a way I can get windows to not automatically change its settings as soon as the monitor is plugged in, or is my VGA port messed up? It shouldn't be, I literally did nothing except try to launch a game on the external monitor without properly changing the resolution in the game's 3d settings before playing, which I've done before and this hasn't occurred.

Does the laptop have hardware control for external monitors--ie, tap the SHIFT + F7 key (varies)?
