    Hi,

I received my new Asus A6J laptop a few days with Windows XP Home.

I need XP Pro so I will be doing complete re-install soon but I found a couple of very strange problems..

    Someone please help

    1. First time I turned on my lappy, it required XP Home product key so I
entered it in. And I made two user accounts. Later on one of the accounts
was deleted in Control Panel->User Accounts.
Now I wanted to put a password on my remaing user account(it didn't ask
for it when I added it) so I went to Control Panel -> User Accounts.
However, I can't see any account.
The window is divided into left panel and right panel.
In left panel, there is 3 help items under "Learn About" heading. When I
clicked them, I get a pop up window with blank page.
In right panel, it's all blue.

    2. When I put in the "Asus A6 NoteBook Series Driver & Utility" CD
, it gets loaded up by AutoRun but the I can not see anything on that
    windows.
It's all blue and I can see there are menu items as I can
mouse over and actually click on them.

    Any idea, anyone ?

BTW, I am holding off windows activation for a moment.

    Would it be related ?

Have you tried to format and install again. Did your notebook come with a restoration disk or an XP install disk? If so try and format and install. I think that something didn't install correctly.

Yeah.. I will have to format since I need to install XP Pro anyways..

    But this is really weird..

Btw, is there difference between OEM XP install CD and XP recovery CD ?
    Mine came with recovery one.

wont the recover fix an already damaged version of windows, as opposed to the retail version of windows which can install onto a blank drive?

im not sure about that one though...

recovery CD's usually only work with the model PC it came with, its basically like using Norton Ghost to ghost an image of the OS that is installed for later use in case of a system crash, so no it isnt the same as a retail CD.

There really isn't a difference that I have experienced with the OEM and Recovery. I think the only difference that I know of at this point would be that the reovery cd copies the new files and replaces the corrupted or missing files. The oem i think can do that too but i am not sure.

Hey guys the original problems are now gone!!!
Nothing was done but it just gone away.

Now I've purchased Windows XP Pro upgrade CD and ready to upgrade but..
a bit concerned with the previous problems and thinking of using recovery CD to to full install and then upgrade...

Can I do a full re-install with recovery CD ?

Also thinking of doing BIOS upgrade....

Any pointers...? as I have no idea what I am about to do...
