Okk, the other day VG did a scan on my system (rather my external HDD) and found quite some files infected with 'Hidrag' and 'Trojan' (hope I am spelling the former correctly). And since then, strange things are happening to my notebook. First, my system sound vanished ( i mean the sounds you get when you click, and stuffs). I restored it, but on the next boot, the sound again vanished. And now, my explorer seems to have died. I cannot open a single folder, no right click works. The windows come for a split second, and then they vanish! I can reboot, and check, but I have a feeling it will recur agan. Help!!

Are you using AVG?
Anyway, i would suggest you to scan the system again for viruses. -
And run a scan with Spybot Search and Destroy + Ad-aware
-
yeah, I am using AVG. Did a scan, and no error reported. But it crashed again today. and both the time, I was working on IE 7.
This spybot.. is it a freeware? -
try going back to n earlier restore point if you just recently installed ie 7. if it came w/ it- vista, u might try doing a repair at boot up w/ your install disk.
just boot vista normally, let it copy files then it will tell you it found windows on your hd. you can hit R for repair- it will be one of the options at that point. it will copy all the sys files to the hd and recovery that instllation if possible.
also, systm resore goes back to almost the day you bought the laptop. you could restore to a week or so ago, as you won't loose any documents or recent work. u might have to re-install some programs, but thats a small price to pay
good luck -
it very well could have been and you are probably right on- good thinking and advise.
but he could go back a couple of weeks if he wants. a clean /smooth running machine would be worth re-installing a few programs to me.......... -
urrrggh. as i write this, i cannot open an extra tab on ie7, no right click works on my system, it only works for a few hours once i start and then blips!
thanks guys for the suggestion. i will do a scan and maybe try a restore. the hidrag came up on my external hdd, which i connected 2 weeks bk, so i will do a restore.no major programs installed, so i am okk. but what happens to the files i created between the restore point and today, i hope they stay. and i have a couple of un finished dnlds on my download acclerator. will they stay, or vanish?
and i do have firefox, but it crashes a lot too, right from the time I installed, some months back. maybe i will try opera.
