    Hello,

Not long ago, Windows use to have a "File Types" tab in "Folder Options" where, among other things, you could change the icon of an association. Fast-forward to Windows 7x64 and that tab has been deliberately removed. Grumble.

The extension in question is TXT. I've changed the associated program back and forth between GetDiz, Notepad and Wordpad, and while the program to open changes, the generic icon remains. Rebooting doesn't fix it.

How do I change the associated icon of a TXT file?

If it's not possible through Windows 7 itself, does a Windows 7 compatible association manager exist?

    Thanks.

Thank you for suggesting both methods. After an exhausted search and running into more than enough sites talking about the RegEdit method, around 3 am this morning I bumped into the Nirsoft site. It's a very interesting site with all sorts of goodies that need further checking out. Once a default icon was created, the issue fix, I fell asleep. Just woke up a few minutes ago and this is the first opportunity I've had.

I don't understand Microsoft's thinking for removing the File Types tab, unless they actually believed that Windows 7 was so perfect that it was no longer needed. Maybe there's a correlation between this and Microsoft severely crippling the search function in Windows 7. Which it would seem Nirsoft offers an alternative that needs further investigating.

Whatever the reason, FileTypeMan is a great solution that fixes Microsoft's oversight.

    Thanks again.
