    Hello

Well the title says it. I am expierencing full out lag with my whole Windows XP home SP2 Operating system. From internet speed to opening folders to choppiness in game at 800 X600 Resolution. I also am getting alot of 404 Erros (FF) It is visually slow I almost thought video drivers but general speed is taking too large of a toll.

It appears to have started with one of these changes.

    1) I use tune XP, EVERYTHING in the memory and file system was checked including clear prefetch folder durring shut down. I changed that so now the prefetch folder is not cleared at shut down (speeded shutdown up to 10 s vs 2-3 minutes)

    2) deleted with Hijack this a O2 BHO noname file

    3) Msconfig, disabling steam, qttask (quicktime) and acrotray (acrobat)

    4) Windows Update

I have done a Virus scan Thorough mode (deepest scan) with Avast! (12 hours)

Help would be great. (sooner is better)

    Cheers!

"deleted with Hijack this a O2 BHO noname file"

Did you get this verified as something bad? HijackThis can really mess up your computer if not used carefully. This is what I believe to be the likely cause. In general, NEVER use hijackThis by yourself. Always get it checked by their forum or on here.

Run a boot-up scan with Avast, then with another scanner, Avira if you can get it on there, in safe mode. Also scan for adware, spyware, etc with a couple programs.

I don't think option 3 or 4 would have caused this to happen. Have you tried resetting everything you changed in Tune XP? Is start-up/shutdown longer now too?

Don't feel bad about not getting any responses and some views. It happens to many people, including myself.

I'll keep tabs on this thread and try to help you. Keyword: try. Hopefully a mod can help you.

Edit: Oh yeah, forgot to ask if you backed up your registry before using HijackThis. If you did, restore your registry.

I think it might be better to do the msconfig stuff before the windows update. Besides, changing your settings back to what they were in msconfig should be easier. Do you have a firewall up and is it telling you anything? Have you looked at Task Manager to see if there's some program eating up your resources?

Hmmm. Have you checked your HD's health using HD Tune and run the benchmark too? Either scan might bring something up or at least eliminate are possibility.

    Thanks jin

I have tried everything now and have been able to get my speed back up to 95% of before. The windows update took the biggest toll at the speed.

    Thanks!

Kind of odd that it was due to windows update. I think I remember something similar, but not nearly as bad happening with my old laptop. Then, when I re-installed the update (about a month later), everything was perfectly fine. The main problem with the slowdown being linked to windows update is that the updates are usually important security stuff.
