My WEI for a 2720qm computer has been in the mid 7's, as expected, ever since I bought it. I upgraded my RAM today from 4gb to 8 gb, and while most WEI categories increased significantly, my CPU one fell to 4.6! Any idea why, and how I could fix this?

check bios. either you should check some settings there OR update chipset drivers and other just in case (gpu etc)

Probably something was running around in the background and eating CPU while the test was reran. That's usually what happens...

I reran the test about 5 times after turning the computer off, restarting, etc. While the other categories change slightly, the processor index remains at a constant 4.6

    a) WEI as an absolute measure of system performance is close to worthless.

    b) Not only is MSFT close-mouthed about how WEI works, by their own admission they are constantly tweaking it

    c) Hardware makers are constantly coming up with ways to cheat/game WEI just as they do with the common synthetic benchmarks.

    d) see a)

It's really an endless circle. WEI gets gamed, MSFT changes it to shut down the cheat, hardware makers come up with a new way to cheat.

If your machine behaves as you want/need it to, don't worry about it.

If you want to keep track of 'perfomrance numbers' you need to choose a series of synthetic benchmarks, run them on a regular basis, and SAVE those results (in a spreadsheet or something) for comparison.

Point in time snapshots of how a system is working tells you nothing other than what was happening at that precise moment in time.

Something is wrong. My T7100 CPU gets 4.9.

From the Advanced tools in the WEI page, click "Clear all WEI scores and re-rate the system". Make sure all other windows are closed, and your security software is disabled.

Sorry but you are optimistic and like to substitute terms for its approval, and not vice versa. But his computer does not care about what you say. It is working wrong.
BTW looks like you did not read a thread one or two days before this one thread was created. I read about the same problem. That guy did all he was suggested (drivers, clear WEI, check BIOS settings).

EDIT: They were talking about not use test in stealth mode but in conducted one. Don't know what it means.
Also flash BIOS, chipset drivers and even GPU driver (not sure why but). All helped him. This is thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m15x/521284-wei-score-core-i7-740qm.html

Why don't you try running a real benchmark program while you're back at 7.5, so that the next time WEI 'breaks' you can see for yourself how worthless WEI is.

I believe you it's just an OCD thing where I need everything on my laptop to be perfect... it'll go away when the sense of it being "new" wears away. After all how would installing extra RAM affect my processor negatively...

No one's really sure what's going on with WEI internally, but MS has said in the past that they constantly tweak it. Perhaps by not having the drivers that you recently installed some feature was disabled thus limiting the maximum 'score' for the CPU.

Yeah most likely. Any rating system that's vague and on a seemingly arbitrary scale usually proves nearly worthless
