Did you use msconfig to disable these programs at startup?

svchost is all windows process into one process. Go to Run, type cmd, press enter, type tasklist/svc This should bring a whole list of lites. Look at the svchosts and it will tell you what windows processes are running under it.

    DNS-client

    SSDP Discovery Service
    TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Service

    HTTP SSL

    Bluetooth support service

    Messenger service (\Msn messenger\usnsvc.dll)

hmm? I only get 3 svchost processes and total of 20 processes running after startup. Have you used the Great Tweaking Companion? Check sections "Startup programs" and "Services" in it.

You have to open a cmd (command) window so that you get a dos prompt before typing "tasklist /svc"
It will give you a list of processes sorta like this-

    Code:
    C:\Documents and Settings\J2>tasklist /svc

    Image Name PID Services
    ========================= ====== =============================================
    System Idle Process 0 N/A
    System 4 N/A

I have very much tweaked my services and startup settings, and I still have 5 SVCHOST processes. Those 5 processes control all the things you see listed on the right side. Those are services that windows runs, which you can find out more about by clicking Start> Run and typing "services.msc"
But don't go disabling stuff willy-nilly, or you'll seriously mess up your stuff.

Including the 4 processes from AVG antivirus, I have 21 processes on startup.

well, my cmd says that the tasklist is a unknows commando

what makes me curious is the messenger list and the http ssl ones... thats the ones i would like to kill, just dont know if it is cleaver to do so :S ive tweaked my services a bit using the guides found around this forum, so ive killed some of the services i didnt find of any use, ie. terminal service, alerter, remote disktop, indexing service, webclient, clipholder, netmeeting, error reporting service, routing and remote access...

After what i found out these services are for no real use for the average user and just takes up memory ?

You should be able to get away with killing these. (Assuming of course you don't use them)
Don't disable SSL. It's used pretty much every time you log in to a website ( https://)
But you should get rid of the messenger one no matter what.

You should also look at the User name under the Windows task Manager too, before you try to permanently disable a process.

I would not disable svchost.exe with a NETWORK SERVICE User Name. I think that might kill my wireless network. (not sure tho).

I have 8 running, Only one is using mem at 27,308k under SYSTEM User Name.
The rest are from 1,000k to only 5,000k.

    It doesn't bother me.

in general, you might as well leave them. Those few MB of memory usage aren't going to make a difference (especially because if the services aren't used, their memory is going to end up in the pagefile anyway, so it won't even consume RAM)
