I'm currently running this:
Lenovo T61
Intel Core2Duo T7300 2ghz
2GB RAM
160GB 5400RPM Hard Drive
Windows Vista Home Premium 32 Bit
My computer use is pretty much limited to heavy photo editing, word processing, and internet browsing. Lots of music and some movies, but no games.
My friend has a copy of 64 bit XP he is not using. I'm very curious about, but I was hoping to have a few questions answered:
-Can I expect a significant performance gain by switching the OS? I know XP is generally faster, but is XP 64 a good, solid, fast OS?
-Can I expect significant compatibility issues now trying to install Photoshop CS2 and some basic programs such as itunes, MS Office, etc.?
-Can I expect Vista to take over soon? Will I have to switch back over to keep up with the times?
I really just want to experience 64 bit processing to take advantage of my dual core 64 bit capabilities... but I'm not sure if its worth it to switch. If you can help me see any significant disadvantages or advantages I'd really appeciate it! Thanks!

From what I've read, Vista 64 is a much better 64-bit OS than XP 64-bit. XP was Microsoft's first 64-bit OS, and it showed a bit. I don't remember all the details now, but compatibility was a major issue (IDK about your specific programs, though MS Office at least should be fine) If you want 64-bit, Vista is probably a better option.
Though you can't beat the $0 price you have. You could always backup your data, install XP 64, see how you like it, and if you don't like it, switch back to Vista 32 (or 64 if you feel like buying it) and give your friend back the extra copy.
And yes, I realize I'm contradicting the "Recommending Windows XP" in my sig. But XP 64-bit isn't the same as regular XP. -
XP 64 is infamous for terrible driver support.

Well there are more drivers now than there have been a year ago. Since Vista x64 is being used by more people (compared to XP x64) I'd say go with Vista. But I seen many manufacturers having drivers for both XP x86 and x64, so you may want to try it out if you want to.
Switch from Vista 32 bit to XP 64 bit?
