Apologies if this has already been addressed, or if it's obvious to people more tech experience than me.

If I have 32 bit Vista, do I have to buy a full price retail copy of 64 bit Windows 7? Can you simply buy, for whatever lesser price MS will charge, the upgrade, and do a clean install from that? Or can you only purchase Windows 7 for the upgrade price if you have a version of Vista on the direct upgrade path?

I am going to be purchasing an Asus N81VP-C1. It comes with 32 bit Vista Home Premium. I would like to get 64 bit Windows 7 once I can.

I ask because I have the option of paying $149 to get 64 bit Vista when I purchase the computer. I wouldn't mind avoiding the extra $150 since I'll get the 32bit version for free.

However, if it'll be cheaper and less hassle in the long run (i.e when moving to Windows 7) to get 64bit Vista with the computer purchase, I'd appreciate the advice.

Why would they charge $149 for the difference between 64bit and 32 as long as it was the same version? You can switch from 32 to 64 within the same version at no charge.
