My older notebook (a POS Compaq Presario 1200) came with Windows ME installed. Is there anyway I can upgrade the software to Windows XP, or would I have to purchase Windows XP OS?

    Thanks!

You'll have to purchase XP. Good news is that you can purchse an upgrade version instead of the full version, so it will be a little bit cheaper.

You can get anywhere for the most part, or at least at any computer store and depending on where you live, Wal-Mart will have it.
Best Buy has for XP Home upgrade edition for $99.

I found XP Home for about $120 (full version) at a local computer store, so you might try calling around to some smaller stores and see if you can find a better price.

    FireFox190,

Here's a link to the Microsoft site that gives full instructions on how to install Windows XP, either as an upgrade or as a full install.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/getstarted/default.mspx

Just so you're aware, upgrading this system to XP will probably make the system very sluggish. It's not really fast enough and probably doesn't meet all the requirements to run XP (recommended, not minimum). You may have to upgrade the ram & HDD.
