I have access to a free copy of Symantec Antivirus Corporate edition (from my school, not illegally). Do people think that these two (Zone Alarm free firewall + Symantec Corporate Antiv.) plus free antispyware stuff is reasonable, or is there something better in the non-free world?

ZA is more problematic than its worth. I personally have had several installations where it's wiped my communications and my brother had a spontaneous "password" initiation. Now he can't download anything without the mystery password and he can't off load the program with that password. Google it you'll find incredible stories. That said, Sygate, while not supported anymore, has had superior reviews without the hassels. You can find v5.6 with a simple search. As SAV, I used it in combination with v5.6 and it's one of the better AV progs I've ever used...great setup and updates; if you have v10.0.1.1008, you'll get daily updates for definitions along with advanced heuristics.

I've had Symantec Corporate and ZoneAlarm for a while on my laptop. Most of the time it was fine, but like Whitney had noticed, ZoneAlarm does have issues. First of all, it increased boot time tremendously. Also, it would sometimes crash during boot and I had to activate it manually later.

Due to a combination of the above, I decided to try a different firewall - Kerio. So far I'm pleased - laptop boots faster, and all the basic features I need from a firewall are there. I also like how it monitors all running processes, their connection and ports, and allows easy access to this information. ZoneAlarm was not very intuitive.

As for SAV Corporate, so far I'm perfectly happy with it - you can set it to daily updates, as Whitney said, and it doesn't seem to be as heavy as the non-corporate versions of Norton.

I don't use Symantic on anything any more. There AV has twice the overhead as their competitors. When they released a virus def that reported virus on files that were clean. And failed to acknowledge they had a problem. They released a update on SUNDAY, that corrected the problem. They wouldn't give me the time of day, or acknowledge any request for confirmation of problem with there def file. I removed them from 20+ computer. And any of my friends that has there service expire switch.

ANY COMPANY THAT WILL NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THEY MADE A MISTAKE CAN NOT BE TRUSTED.
