Both are given free from the uni I am going to attend. Any thoughts on which is better? I'm using the Symantec and it's far better than the Norton stuff they usually have.

oh my...the choices...on one hand, I've installed SAV Corp. (latest at the time) on just re-imaged machines, left them for several months - they got so infested it wasn't funny; but SAV said it was clean and patterns were up to date.
McAfee now, is used in the corporate networks at the gov. division I worked at, and..well.. - lets just say it's equally as good as SAV Corp (which is what was used prior on said networks).
Both are great at getting the most 'common' (note: I didn't say latest) viruses.
You might want to check out either one of the products below:
www.nod32.com
www.kaspersky.com
...both have consistently proven themselves in virus lab tests (and no - not the paid and bought tests from places like PC Magazine nor Cnet, etc.).

Perhaps but Kaspersky is expensive while I really disliked the trial of NOD32.
Hm. I mean I'm merely using this as a worst case scenario. I know how to avoid most of this stuff. And how much of a footprint does Kasperksy have? -
Are you using thisa for anything other than your personal system? If not...AVG Antivirus is worth a check. Its free, catches everything, updates itself daily and uses very little resources. It can be had at download.com search avg.

Hm. Kaspersky is getting a lot of good reviews. I'll try the 30 day trial.

I actually second what flamenko said - if this isn't your personal system, Grisoft's AVG antivirus ( www.grisoft.com) free edition might be a good choice -> better than SAV Corp. or McAfee in my opinion.
But yea, Kaspersky is pretty neat - I love how it has all those registry and process guard features built in to protect not only windows but itself as well (especially with the password option to thwart viruses attempting to telling the program to close).
The only downside I've ever seen with kaspersky is if a computer is totally messed registry-wise, or windows is just really totalled - installing Kaspersky WON'T make it any better.
However, installing Kaspersky straight off the bat onto a Completely New System has always worked wonderfully
if you live in the US/Canada, you can get Kaspersky Internet Security from NCIX.com for $20-$30-> I know I did
and what's also neat is that everytime they come out with a new revision - your original key will work as long as it's not past the validation date (i.e. 1 year keys work for 1 year, etc.).

Thanks. I'll definitely look into that.
