I normally use remote access from the laptop, so I'm actually working on the desktop computer. Is there any way to work directly on the laptop and have all changes reflected on the desktop? Does Laplink or some other software accomplish this? Thanks!

I don't see how dropbox would work. There'd be dozens of scattered files changed while I was working on the laptop, I'd have to copy the whole hard drive to dropbox?
-
Live Mesh can handle that, the initial round can be a bit slow though, depending on how much file you are talking about.
Another possibility is using traditional version control systems like git.
For windows users, I would say Live Mesh is the easiest and it is free. -
Sugarsync and Windows Live Mesh look interesting, but they seem to be geared toward syncing stuff like music and photos. I'd be looking at syncing pretty much the entire hard drive. So any changes I make in Word or Excel, or links that I mark as read in the browser, etc, would show up on every computer. Are these programs meant to be used that way?

Entire drive ? that is impossible due to size. Why would you want to sync c:\windows or c:\program files ?
I just make it sync my directories of choice and it does include my word/excel etc. i.e. all those things that cannot be handled in my git setup(which I used for sync my developement source as I need the log as well).
I am not sure if it can sync the 'links being read' as that is actually just your IE cache which I don't even know where it is stored. -
That's actually one of the most important things to me (mostly using Firefox). There are many sites that aren't conducive to RSS, so the only way I can tell which links I've already reviewed is to mark them as read.

If you can find out where firefox stored its temp file etc., you can sync that directory. live mesh works on directories and files.

it sounds like your best bet is to use a cloud based OS that would allow you to log into to it from anywhere... for example joilclouds web site
