So I have a Western Digital Passport External Hard Drive which until now has held the only copy of all my files, and which I've used with my desktop, so it's always been plugged in.
Now, I've gotten a laptop to replace my desktop, so I'd like to transfer all my files from my WD Passport to my laptop, so I don't have to carry it around with me, and I would like to use the WD Passport as a backup of all my files.
Basically I want to just plug in the drive whenever I'm at my desk, and it automatically syncs all my documents and backs up all my work. I'm not sure if I'm using those terms well, but I think you get the basic idea.
How can I accomplish this very simply? I understand it could be done through Vista's "Sync Center" but it doesn't appear to recognize my WD Passport. So what can I do?

Which version of the Passport do you own? Did it come with any backup software?
The Vista Sync software isn't really the best thing for backing up data. I've found it to be troublesome to use. I've found it's always better to use software that is designed for performing backups. If you don't want to plunk down any cash, you can take a look at AceBackup. It looks like a pretty good free backup system that should meet your needs. -
I think it has Sync, but it appears to be a 30-day trial. -
If you are just looking to back up folders (and not entire drive partitions) then use Microsoft Synctoy. Its very simple to use and run. If you are looking to back up entire partitions, use DriveImage XML. Both are free.

I've found SyncBack (free version works just fine) to be a great backup tool. If you want it to run automatically when the drive is plugged in, what I'm thinking is just to set up an Autorun file on the external drive so that it runs the backup program.

Haha, I just downloaded Microsoft Synctoy, and it's awesome. Just what I'm looking for! Thank you deathstick.
