Does Vista keep a log file anywhere of what exactly happens when you do a system restore?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but isn't that for previous versions?

I'm wondering how to find out what files/registry settings/etc. are changed when you do a System Restore as described in the "Restoring Windows Vista to a previous State" section of the link you posted.

I don't think there is a log of the exact changes. What exactly is your situation?

System Restore/ Previous version/ Shadow Copies all use the same technology.

System restore essentially makes a copy of your registry and other files and saves them as a restore point.

Norton kinda died on me after I did a System Restore... I'm suspecting that it restored some of Norton's files to an earlier version but not others, leaving me with a half-restored and broken program. Undoing the System Restore didn't fix the problem either.

So before I fix it the long way (uninstall, run the Norton cleanup tool, reinstall and pray it works), I'd like to check.
