I'm trying to restore my PC to an earlier date to get rid of a virus (hijacker). Avast failed to get rid of the source. When I try to do a system restore, I get an unsuccessful message telling me it didn't work. I tried it in safe mode, and it still didn't work. I'm guessing something is interfering with it.

Alternatively if you know a good program that can get rid of this hijacker, that would be appreciated.

I was going to suggest in safe mode just by reading the title. Perhaps you can try Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and Spybot? It's worth a shot. And maybe tell us what else you have tried.

Right...System Restore doesn't always work...Your best best might be to save your needed data and re-install the OS; or if you're using XP you can try popping in your XP Installation disc and go through this guideline. [Skip to Repair Install]

There's a chance you might not see the second Repair option as #5 of the guideline states; if you don't then you might just have to re-install. If you do decide to re-install just make sure you backup your needed data and get the neccessary drivers for your system before hand.

If you're using .Vista then I can't help you.

*Note: This is what I would do if I was in your situation. You do have a choice and you do not have to take my advice.

I'm getting suspicious with this rundll55.exe that's running. I'll try working with Avast to see if it is interfering with system restore.

Yea those rundlls that you see in task manager are usually problematic..esp. if you're not running a system specific program such as Control Panel applications etc.
