I have a HP dv9500z CTO notebook with 2Gb RAM using Vista Ultimate 32 bit with SP-1 (retail full) OS. The system no longer recognizes the existence of my internal CD/DVD drive, but it does see and operate my external drives. The drive spins if I insert a disc, but does not read or show up when “Computer” is selected from the start menu. Everything else still works. Can anyone help?

Check device manager. Do you have a question mark on your cd drive?

Does anything show up in the device manager, such as a yellow warning triangle icon affixed to the listing of the CD/DVD drive in the list of devices?

YES. It does show a conflict. Should I remove and reinstall?

What's the conflict? It is strange that there would be something like an IRQ conflict for a CD-ROM drive.

Try taking your optical drive out, then restart the pc, then shut it down, and put it back in and reboot.

First, see if you can get more detail on what the conflict is, and some idea of what's causing it.
