I have a USB drive attached to the main computer in our house for storage and backup. I have my backup folder mapped to that letter.

Look at that drive in Device Manager. Is the Policy set to Best Performance or Fast Removal?

The former setting will boost the speed but remember to use safe removal when you have finished.

And have you applied the Performance and Reliabiltiy pack from Microsoft? It is available from Windows Update and it seems to solve the problem of slow transfer.

Is that poor transfer speed steady, or does it slowly cycle up to acceptable levels?

I just transferred a 32+GB folder to my USB backup this morning and the transfer started slow but then steadily rose to 25.2MB/sec (which is my best speed to date). I have the drive set for Performance and check it regularly (as it sometimes slips back into Quick Removal mode).

Turn any music you're playing off, see if that speeds things up. That's a known bug. Also consider disabling McAffee firewalls, if you have them.

The transfer actually only took about 20 minutes. I just thought it was pretty funny that Windows even measures transfer times in days........

Strange how Vista is reporting the transfer incorrectly. I have not seen that happen yet..........

It appears Windows thinks that particular file transfer will take a total of 38 years.

That number only appears when it starts but once it does start you'll see the actual minutes go down.
