When I press ctrl alt delete every option shows up except for task manager. Anyone know what could be the problem?

Press and hold in the following order: CTRL ALT DELETE
    Then Click "Start Task Manager"

Try this - Right click on the taskbar; there should be an option there that opens Task Manager.

Hmm, that's unusual. Are you the administrator of the computer?

After googling " Cannot access task manager"
It appears this is because of a virus on your computer.
    I'm still reading about it....

or it could be a group policy from a network administrator who does not want employees to access task manager.

Yes, and the only user too.

I'm pretty sure it's not a virus since I almost never get them since I know how to avoid them and I also recently just reformatted my laptop.

Wouldn't that require me to be connected to some sort of network for a business? I only use my homes wireless router.

Yes, it would, but since you didn't give us any information we're kind of blind here.

For example, what version of Windows are you using? You haven't given us anything to go on. It's like if I called my car mechanic and said, "My car won't start. What's wrong with it. Oh, it's a blue one."

C'mon man, throw us a bone....

    Anyway,
    Start > run
    regedit
    <enter >

    Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

Anything in there about task manager?

Sorry about that but I'm running Vista x64 Sp2.

I tried what you said but it said registry editing has been disabled by my administrator. How can that be if I'm the only user account on the laptop which is administrator also?

Sounds like malware or a virus if you ask me...

Let me guess, UAC is turned off and you have no AntiVirus installed. Right?

    You are definitely infected

Many viruses will insert some policies in the registry to prevent you from killing them. Locking you out of the registry editor and the task manager are two favorites.

You probably cannot run system restore either--of if you can, you will find your restore points corrupted or gone. You may not even be able to install an antivirus program now.

This is really not a forum designed for virus removal, but there are a number of forums that will take you by the hand and walk you through the process with a trained helper.

Visit www.geekstogo.com and head to the malware forum and read then follow the instructions at the top
