At one time I had taskbar thumbnails showing but now I can't seem to get it back. the "Show Window Previews (thumbnails)" is grayed out. Is there another setting I'm missing? I have Windows Aero chosen.

oh ur lucky, i actually had to physically disable that
-
Go to Control Panel > Sys & Maint > Perf & Tools > Adjust Visual Effects
Be sure desktop composition and the transparency settings are on. Actually, enable everything, click Apply, then disable what you don't want and click Apply again. (Otherwise it acts weird for me sometimes.) -
No that didn't work either. It's very weird. I logged in on the Administrator account and the option was available to click on or off. Later after I'd logged in on my regular account, I went back in to Admin account and the option was grayed out.

mmm try this...
1. Open the registry and browse
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer"
2. add/set "TaskbarNoThumbnail" (Dword) = 0 -
That didn't work either....thanks for the help though

I found something interesting. I logged on using the administrator account and low and behold thumbnails were working again. So I created a new account and sure enough Thumbnails work in it too. Must be a setting in my regular account that is wrong but for the life of me I can't find it.

Did you try Lawrence's suggestion while logged into the account in question? It won't work if you do it from the administrator account.
Although, you might have to give the account admin rights to edit the registry. Not sure.
