For those of you that may have been part of the Microsoft Technet Subscriptions, it is being terminated. This means all Office and Windows products. This sucks because you will now only have limited time access to most products and require constant reactivation. As an enthusiast, it's only helped MS provide free service to users (from me) since it gave me opportunity to trial software I otherwise would not be able to afford. Now you either have to meet the specific criteria for their other services, or purchase a very expensive MSDN annual subscription.

I wish I had seen this sooner because if you signed up before September 30, you would get another year....

Another thing I was just thinking of is that I've used Pro and Ultimate licenses on a few of my machines and if I have to buy the software, I have to do a full reinstall if I want to downgrade to Home Premium (to save money) and that is a major PITA.

I'm hoping I can find a volume license somewhere for Pro or Ultimate relatively cheap.

This crap is gonna cost me over $1000 now... I hate MS. I really really do. Two HTPC's, two desktops, three laptops, and a partridge in a pair tree... being free tech support is a b!tch. From now on I charge anyone here on NBR $10 for advice. Look for the PayPal desperation button.

My thought on this is that M$ wants those TechNet subscriptions converted to license sales, especially the Win8 ones. This is one way to get those sales up, so possibly yet another desperate attempt by them. That huge hit on the RT systems isn't helping the matters either.

It is a shame as if M$ would have appeased their current clients with Win8 the sales would have been much better from upgrades. People upgrading, including myself, would have been more likely to purchase those over stocked RT's instead of an Android tablet. While I am not saying all would have been a batch of roses things could have definitely been better..................

Already considered it. But since most are worthless piles of poo, they wouldn't garner much money. Only thing worth a salt is my laptop and desktop.

What is the big deal? So now you have to buy the software like the rest of us mortals? Seems they should have warned you sooner though. BTW, this next laptop I buy will be the first time I will have to buy Windows. I lost my connections, so no longer get free Windows. So it goes.

So now I won't be able to help with different issues because I'm not going to buy a bunch of licenses for different versions of OS, Server, Office, etc. That's the point. Anyone could have joined the TechNet anyhow, as long as they did it for the right reasons, basically not give or sell the keys to anyone else.

I don't know what support you were doing before, but you are pretty smart so I think you will still be able to help. I used to have a technet subscription through my work. I know it can be useful. I also think many abused them. I never did, that was not how I got my operating systems.
