I've been following the "Show your desktop" thread for a while and really like what several people have done with Rainmeter instead of Sidebar gadgets. However, several people have also mentioned that Rainmeter requires coding it yourself. That is off-putting to me, as I know nothing of computer coding.
I would like to use Rainmeter, but I would also like to ask those that use it how difficult it is to use. How much coding does it take? How complex is the coding? Is it something that someone who has never done any sort of coding could do, or does it require previous knowledge of how to write computer code?
I am a technical person (mechanical engineer) and would be interested in learning to use Rainmeter, provided one does not need a Computer Science degree to use it.
So, to those that use Rainmeter, tell me about it...
Thanks,
Mac

Anyone? There seemed to be several people using it, and many more that were interested...

When people say coding, it's hardly coding. You don't write the scripts yourself. You just adjust them. e.g a weather gadget will have a code and one of the lines will say...
location=www.weather.com/blahblahblah/nzl333.html
which means that the location is auckland new zealand, all you would need to do is replace the url with your locations.
Other e.g are just like font size for customizing. e.g...
hardrivesize.font = 5
and you can change 5 to the size you want.
All in all it's fairly easy to use and there are plenty of guides available to help you too. -
Thanks for your input. Could you point me to one of the guides you speak of? I googled "rainmeter coding guide" and got nothing...

Did you read the manual? http://www.ipi.fi/~rainy/Rainmeter/Manual.html
You can also dl skins -
Bumping because there was another request in the desktop thread asking for a Rainmeter thread.
Rainmeter gurus, where are you? There seem to be many of us that could use some help, we would appreciate your input in this thread.
Thanks for the link to the manual, btw. It will be a while before I can read the whole thing, though (busy 2 weeks ahead...)

I don't really consider myself a power user, but I just downloaded and fiddled around with it really. Sort of taught myself. Just find a skin you want, download it, follow the instructions they come with. Right click on it and edit the skin settings, not the programs settings. You need to Right Click|Skin Menu|Edit Skin. Then you will have the code for that specific skin, then you can edit simple things. The author should of detailed what each line of code does.
Tell me about Rainmeter...
