Can one browse the web the "texty" way, that would be way too faster than the full blown graphical ads and stuff.

If you use Firefox, you can probably find addons that block everything but text.
I'm pretty sure Opera has that feature as well. -

^ Certainly. But I agree with the idea of simply setting up Adblock to block *jpg*, *jpeg*, *gif*, and *bmp*. That would take care of 99% of the images you see on the web. To tackle scripts, *js* would do.

Isn't lynx badly outdated? Is there a version of it which runs on win xp/vista?

Better way would be to get Cygwin and install Lynx in it (using the GUI Setup wizard).
