does anyone else have this issue with vista currently? i've been searching for hours on a fix...but i can't seem to find something that works for vista.
microsoft's "DIY" diagnostic didn't work. Audio Service cannot be re-started. computer has been rebooted multiple times & i've also deleted & re-installed audio drivers. sound worked fine till a windows update a few days back. a system restore did NOT fix the issue.
computer is a sager 8662, vista 64, gtx-260m, no add-on sound cards.

Have you gone over to hardware manager to see if the hardware is detected? Otherwise I can only think of uninstalling the windows update...but that doesn't seem necessary.

i was online with MS support for nearly 3 hours today. nothing yet.
i did the hardware detection 2x, based on an online q&a suggestion. didn't work either. nor did uninstalling update--which is what the system restore rollback demonstrated for me.
the support tech was adding hard code into the registry & still nothing. -

is this common for vista sp2 users? i seem to see a LOT of sound issues that seem to be related to this. i wasn't able to fully update my pc till recently--so that may be why it only recently hit me.
-
this is why i blocked SP2 and stuck with SP1
SP2 vista is unstable, MS had vista working well and then they started their *bleep* again. What you can try is re-choosing the sound output. Also if you want, find out the name of the audio service process and right click "computer" and select "manage". From there, go to services/services and applications then find the name corresponding to the audio service. Double click it and select start from the popup window OR right click it and say "start" if it cannot start, then the problem is inherently with Windows Vista. If the update cannot be uninstalled, the last-resort thing to do is a system wipe, but of course I really mean last resort.
But honestly if you cannot find anything that works, type in that problem in google and search around the Q&As that result and see if anyone's found a fix. You should be able to do it. -

well there's a file called "avrt.dll" that seems to possibly be related to this issue. i've downloaded a good file...but i cannot replace the old. and that's even AFTER i changed ownership rights on it.

go into safe mode, you'll be allowed to have your way with files as you please. It's probably protected by windows. See if that helps the issue any

Try uninstalling the driver in safe mode

well congratulations. i restarted it in an attempt to get it into safe mode. now, i can't even get it started PERIOD. it goes all the way from initial "sager" load screen, past the windows load bar--and flashes a blue screen of death for 1/4 sec, then repeats.
i have a repair center looking at it. ing micro -
Friend, my humble advice, find a wonderful thing called an OS installation disc. Pop in, wipe clean, block SP2, install updates as normal, be happy =)
Sorry about your loss though -
even the you see an icon with an x marked speaker....??? try......when using the keyboard function keys, try moving the volume up and down, and it normally starts the audio service....
-
wow, won't even safe mode. FAIL.
The Audio Service is not running...
