    There is no best/worst.

Also - registry cleans can solve problems (it once did on my mother's old laptop - somehow it kept accessing the HDD all the time...) but it can break things too - it did so on my old Medion... (HP scan drivers)

If you have to use a registry cleaner I recommend your own head as "the driving force".
Meaning: Run for example the CCleaner one, then read every entry and manually select the ones you are sure you don't need.

Overall - unless you unistalled something as horible as Winamp there is no need for a registry cleaner. (Winamp leaves a lot of junk...)

Then do it step by step. You are nearly certain to break something if you just trust the programme.

Also - unless you have a significant problem you most likely wont notice a change.

Use whatever is best for you, or what you think that it is best. Just backup the registry before each cleaning pass, plus use a restore point.

    cheers ...

Can I trust CCleaner's registry cleaner? :( thought I'd rather use a specialized registry cleaner rathern than a generic cleaning program such as CCleaner?

Yeah CCleaner is great and I have also been using Quicksys Regdefrag which is free and gives you a percentage off how much is being fixed.

Been using it for vista but sure it works with xp

I would not trust ANY registry cleaners. Use them carefully, and back up your registry first (+ restore point) as stated above.

cCleaner is for me a "safe" one to use, since it is not too "aggressive".

    cheers ...

I use TuneUp Utilities. Except the registry cleaner it has a lot of other features, pretty good one. Never had any problems with cleaning the registry or after. Also has a backup feature. A free utility same as this one is Glare Utilities.

    Also check this. And this.

I used to think registry cleaners were great but I haven't used any since I got my new desktop running XP and it has been fine. No crashes, no problems and everything runs just fine. I wonder if we really need registry cleaners.

I use CCleaner and yes, I do trust the program not to mess up my registry, mind you I've never had a problem, however, there is a nifty registry backup option included with CCleaner in case anything goes awry.

CCleaner is good, but it has messed up the UltraNav drivers on my Thinkpad before - the control panel for mouse settings wouldn't open after I cleaned my registry. A reinstall of the driver fixed it though. Now I just untick anything to do with "Synaptics" and it's good.

Odd, I've never had any problems with CCleaner on my laptop which uses a Synaptics touchpad, must be model specific/os bug.

I've used CCleaner every day for the past two years to clean out the registry on my Thinkpad T60 and I've never had any issues concerning Synaptics or the rest of the IBM/Lenovo proprietary software suite.

CCleaner is the safest and easiest to use for a registry newbie like me..i have used it for long time with no problem at all.

just remember to run the reg cleaner 2-3 times if it finds lot of useless entries

The best I've used so far: http://www.forospyware.com/t713.html. The manual is in spanish, but I'm sure you'll be able to find one in your own language.

Didn't mess anything and more powerfull than Ccleaner one (which is already good by the way...).
