If you're looking for an MP3 player that will store a large library of music, get yourself a zune 80/120.

Considering this a notebook forum and this sub forum is OS and software, he meant a computer program music player. I was being sarcastic with iPod.

iPod usually = iTunes = no.

    If you're looking for software:
    MediaMonkey

    If you're looking for hardware:
Creative has always been the way to go

No one can deny that iPod is the best MP3 player regardless if you don't like Apple. Of course that's an opinion but the facts and market share don't lie.
Just because you have an iPod doesn't mean iTunes...I have an iPod and don't have iTunes.
Like you said, even Media Monkey can sync your ipod or winamp, etc.

Even though the Ipod has the largest sales, you can't deny the Ipod also has the largest amount of money put into advertisement lol. Just try and compare a Cowan D2(a what? my point exactly lol :p) to an Ipod in terms of marketing >.> That alone does not make it the best player, but it is a solid and reliable player nonetheless.

As for software, I kinda use the software that came with my Samsung, notably the Emodio thing, which works similar to iTunes, but IMO has better sound output(and customizable equalizers).

I can deny it - the reason I loathe Apple is because of experience - I owned a 1st gen iPod Nano and it troubled me from day 1. Maybe I was unlucky, maybe their support is better outside of Ireland, maybe, maybe, maybe, but my experience with Apple Customer Service was a horrible, painful one. Once they got my money they didn't care any more. It was then that iTunes started to crash, and I realised how much of an inefficient, bloated program it was, and how hard it would be for an average user to get rid of it.

    market share don't lie
Vista hasn't sold well, because of the "facts" surrounding its bloat etc. Vista is awesome - I've grown to hate (maybe that's not the right word) XP now, because it seems so much more inefficient - eg folder navigation.

I know other programs, MediaMonkey for example, can synch iPods, but unless it's changed drastically since when I used it, it's not something the typical end user is going to want to do.
Plus I hate its navigation system - I much prefer MM's "tree" layout.

Well iPods and even itunes have improved dramatically since first generation ipods...

EDIT: Even apple support is better. What is there thing inside there store called. Genius or something lol. You got 1st gen. ipod which was the guinea pig. If you haven't got an ipod since, you might be missing out. dont be stubborn just because of faulty customer service. ;p

I think everyone knows the difference between an MP3 player, and an MP3 playing software.

But not everyone can detect sarcasm in an online post on forums. Try writing /sarcasm for the added humor.

I've had a 30 and an 80 gig ipod video. Both ended up dying approximately a month - 2 months after warranty ended.

Bought an 80 gig zune. The Zune software is so much better then itunes, and it lets you buy unlimited music for $15 a month.

Whats that you say ronnieb? $15 a month!?

Yep $15 a month. Considering 15 songs on itunes=$15. And you don't get to keep the songs.

The actual firmware on the Zune has bigger fonts, and is a lot easier to navigate.

I have an 80gb Zune. It's pretty sweet. I used to have an 60gb iPod though. However, I like the Zune more.

If iPod Touch's came held 50+ gigs of data and were less than $400, I'd say go for one of those, but that's not the case... :D

lol you'd be surprised how many people completely defected from a company due to a poor product experience or poor customer service(ex: HP, Sony or any other notebook company for the sake of this forum's theme lol :p)

Obviously you can say it got better, but some people will always be skeptical. If I bought something and it gave me trouble, I wouldn't be prone to buy one again, it's simple reasoning.

Not that I think Ipods are bad. I don't own one myself, but I know lots of people who do and they're happy. I just find Ipods don't have the best price/performance ratio out there here in Canada.

The pricing may be better, but I hate the zune software, I love my zune device, but hate the software. That's just a matter of preference though.

    For software:
Media Monkey is nice, Foobar 2000 is good b/c its customizable, and Songbird is showing some promise.

Yep, the software for the Zune is terrible. Unlike iPods, you NEED to use the Zune software in order to add music to your device. There is some hack to trick the Zune so you can use applications such as winamp to sync music, but it's a pain in the butt.

Agreed, but the main problem was that ipods were new at the time and it had problems. Technology and innovative features DRAMATICALLY improved it so i think this is an exception. but something like laptops and stuff is understandable.

I have a 8gb flash Zune. The software can be annoying.

Id prefer an mp3 player that you can just drag and drop the music into like a flash drive instead of using some annoying software.

Is there anyway to unlock/crack the new Zunes?

Well there isn't any reason you cant' apply the same reasoning to both. Although I wouldn't say the technology changed drastically, ubt it did change and the design and stuff changes as well over time so companies do improve themselves. It's just a question of skepticism whether or not you as a consumer are willing to take that "risk".

Anyways, I also prefer mp3 players were you can "drag & drop" I always found that feature to be the easiest lol :p

I'm a COWON guy, since the CW200. Sounds good, got lots of features. You just gotta get used to folder navigation (for MOST, but not ALL COWONs), and a less intuitive GUI. Otherwise, you'll get a player that supports pretty much all of the codecs out there, with good sound quality and other features (that you probably won't use, but they're there. I use them).

Good part is it's UMS. Drag and drop, driver free, Linux, Mac, Windows all work.

You make a good point, its so apparent that even you misspelled COWON. ;) I've tried ipod, zune, creative, samsung, cowon, iriver, sansas, rio, rca, archos, and pretty much anything else I've ran across. And out of everything I've tried or owned, I'd have to say that the Cowon D2 is by far the best all around player. I've been big in the DAP(digital audio player) market for a long time and I keep my eyes out for all new products and if I don't test them then I talk to people who I know well that has tested them. I know the Cowon D2 isn't for everyone, but it most certainly is for me and I'll be sure to have one for years to come. Just because something sells the most doesn't mean its the best. The Ford F-150 is the 'best selling truck' but that certainly doesn't mean its the best truck. And its even worse in the DAP world because the ipod has become such a fashion statement, its like Paris Hilton and her taco bell dog. ;)

I planned that I swear  *cough* *cough*

    :D

Yeah well my point was that, Ipods have lots of advertising so obviously people know more about them than any other player which certainly increases the Ipod's sales exponentially.

It has nice features such as cover flow and stuff, but the sound is ordinary, not many customizable features on the sound(not even sure when they put equalizers if at all).

The one thing I have to compain about my Samsung is that it's not a UMS but a MTP.
