Any idea why this would happen? I'm reasonably sure it was working fine before, but I may just be imagining things and it was never there to begin with.
EDIT: It's still playing correctly in Windows Explorer, though.

The 'Start Navigation' click sound is off by default in IE9, it got me too. Don't ask me why MS turned it off
You can follow the instructions in this link to turn it back on:
Clicking Sound while Browsing Internet and Windows Explorer - Turn Off - Windows 7 Forums
The short version:
Click Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced tab -> Under 'Accessibility', check 'Play System Sounds'.
There you go! -
Wow, I wouldn't have caught that one. Personally, I hate the StartNav sound. It's the first thing I disable. When I got this laptop, last year, I kept hearing this annoying noise every time I clicked on something. Lots of clicks = lots of noises. Ugh.
Though I understand that some people just like chocolate over vanilla, it never crossed my mind that anyone could love the StartNav sound. -

I could've sworn it was still playing in IE9 for a while.
Probably my imagination.
The default "start navigation" click sound just stopped in IE9
