I care less about the quality of the name and more about the quality of the product.

Lol. I really do believe they will make it less annoying though. They received a lot of heat for UAC.

I'd give it a four of five ranking. It's easy to remember, doesn't imply any high expectations that are likely to be missed (a la Vista), and makes sense coming after release 6 (discounting the fact that Microsoft normally would have 6.1 after 6). A good "name" name could have been better, but really neither XP nor Vista were great in that department, so perhaps going against that was a good idea for Microsoft. And a year name ("Windows 2010") just doesn't seem as well with 4 digits as with 2 (a la Windows 95) or a round number (Windows 2000), and besides would introduce confusion with the server releases. Needless to say, Windows 6.1 would have seemed an odd name for it to consumers - and who really calls Windows 98 "Windows 4.1" or XP "Windows 5.1"?

Blackcomb and Vienna did both sound good, but I'm not sure either would have quite hit the spot. I probably would have prefered Vienna of the two, but they probably decided that going with a city name could have unintended consequences (imagine if they'd named ME "Windows Washington" and then it had the reception it did - political critics would have had a lot of fun with that).

Has anyone else noticed how "Seven" sounds a little like "Vista"? They are each 5 letters long, and two syllables, and they share two of their three consonants: the V and the S. Seven sounds like Vista shifted around and smoothed out a bit... which should be (from what I've seen and read so far) exactly what the OS will be like.

I don't really care, but I'm a bit annoyed because I see it as another thing Apple fanboys will see as Windows "copying" their beloved Mac OS: the number naming thing. Windows 7 [seven]. Mac OS X [ten].

Anyway, at least it's easy to refer to. Like Windows XP, you could just say XP. Now, you could just say 7 or W7. Vista is such a long name! Vista sucks!!

[If it isn't very obvious, it's a joke and a corny one at that]

Well, my impression of W7 is that its theme is K.I.S.S., so the name fits right in.
