Vista Ultimate is OK and everything, but I feel that the performance is not as good as it can be (e.g., too many new features running and other personal reasons). I've already reformatted twice and each time Vista feels slower. I was thinking about switching back to XP as I always felt comfortable with it and trying out 64bit (might as well).
Is the 64bit version of Window's XP as solid as the 32bit? If I'm downloading drivers for my laptop, are the ones listed for Windows XP compatible with 64bit? (Theres only XP, Vista 32 and Vista 64)
OR I can try out Vista Ultimate 64bit (maybe even Home Premium instead?)
any suggestions? I'm probably going to reformat with Vista Utimate 32bit one last time next week. If things improve, i'll just stick with it, maybe upgrade to the 64 bit version

from what i have gathered, xp64 was designed as a after-thought by microsoft, long after xp32 was released. for vista64, microsoft actually developed it side-by-side with vista32.
only thing working against vista64 is the scarcity of 64bit hardware drivers. and the current crops probably wasn't fully optimized for vista64.
i am currently slowly building up a 64bit driver library for my sony vaio sz483, going to give it a try one of these day ... -
Yeah, xp64 was never really finished, and the drivers were never really done; stay away!

Its basically Windows Server anyway.
If you want XP, go with 32 bit. -
oy, thats what i thought. i think i'll just reformat one last time with Vista Ultimate 32bit and see how it goes.

As a note, you can switch to Vista 64bit and all you need id the 64bit disc. You do not need to buy another license for it -- your 32bit license will work fine. All you need is the disc, which is less than $10. See the F-A-Q in the "Clean Install" guide in my sig.

Its Sad. I cant stand regular xp now. x64 is addicting. I don't know why...
-
I would say Vista 64-bit has great driver support, and X64 is pretty sad.
