I just bought a new laptop; however, for some odd reason it says "This copy of Windows is not geniune." Does this ever happen? What is the problem with this?
-
Sure, MS flags it as a pirated copy. Take it back to the seller.
cheers ... -
You kidding me?... Wow...
-
Nope ...
cheers ... -
Where did you buy your laptop?
-
Wow... I bought the laptop at Best Buy yesterday. And I brought it back to them today because the whole packaging was done very poorly. Now I complained to them asking for a exchange yet they claim that I was mistaking the whole problem.
Now I come home and boot up my computer and Windows says that the OS is not geniune. Come on... Can I get get some kind compensation for this? I was in the best buy talking with the mananger for an hour. This is total bs. -
??? They should just replace the whole unit, and test it right there with you.
cheers ... -
No but I already went in and claimed the whole notebook seemed like a defect becuase the packaging was weird. And the guy pretty much ignored me and said it was all fine. Now I have to make my 3rd trip to Best Buy telling them not only was the whole thing package all weird and now the OS is fed up.
I think this is a real bs. -
Ask to speak to the manager. Good lucks.
cheers ... -
Already went in and spoke to the manger for an hour about why I believe my computer was an used copy. However, I thought I had enough evidence so never fully booted the comp up. The manager boots the comp up and pretty much says "Oh see its working perfectly." Now I go home and boot the comp up completely with enterting my name and pass and etc, and now it says Window is not geniune. I mean seriously, this is BS...
The manager keeps pointing at the seal and claims everything is fine; however, now I have to make another 20 min drive on July 4th. -
I can't believe Best Buy would sell you a copy of Window's that's not genuine.
-
Just validate there and show them. Did you buy with credit card or cash? If credit card then just tell Best Buy you'll dispute the charge. Most credit cards will refund the charge. Also, Best Buy has a 14 day return policy. If the notebook is still "like new" just return it and buy one elsewhere.
-
Okay I just rebooted my laptop and the thing disappeared. Got a screen shot of it though. But my question is does that my notebook is fine? Is there a way to check if this error exist somewhere?
Here is the screen shot of what I had before.

i personally want this message to pop back up, becuase my notebook obviously is not fine. -
You need to call 888-bestbuy and ask for consumer relations, I work for Geek Squad tech support so I know this can be resolved.
-
They could have installed a beta of SP1 (which would cause that error msg) and then it updated itself to the proper one. Thats the only reason I can think of.
Try to use the Validation Tool and if its all fine then I don't think you have a problem. -
When did you first get this problem? Did you browse the internet before you saw it? Although it's unlikely, maybe it's a fake alert produced by a malicious program. Try to take a screenshot or just a regular picture of the screen with the alert and post it here.
-
I posted a screen shot on my last post. It just popped up when I first started up my laptop. Now it says there is no problem.
-
where the hell are the Asus recovery disks? This whole thing can be resolved by just reimaging the laptop.
-
Since you said you just bought it, new, why don't you just take it to the customer service counter and return it. They have a 14 day no-questions-asked return policy don't they?
Also, to make sure your copy is Genuine, just go to Start > Right-click Computer > Properties and the screen that comes up will show (on the bottom) whether it's activated or not and whether it's genuine or not (under Windows Activation). -
-
I would demand an exchange or refund if you feel that funny about the laptop not actually being new.
-
-
Perform a windows update, and Microsoft will validate windows for you, if it's too legit to quit.
-
no recovery discs are (usually) the fault of the user.
-
-
Some do, some dont. Business class notebooks usually include them.
Most consumer notebooks will either come with a recovery partition or DIY recovery disks or even both.
Looking at the screenshot, usually theres a pop up saying its not genuine and it will lock down sooner or later. -
No recovery disks are (usually) the fault of the user because the user bypasses the OS welcome messages that prompt for the creation of those recovery discs.
You guys going to argue what shade of blue the sky is today? -
Quick check: Load this page and click the blue Validate button on the left hand side.

From seeing in person the woes of people caught without operating system disks, I have to say that if at all possible, get reinstallation media. It is a real kick in the balls when your computer gets gutted and you can't do anything to fix it. -
Maybe they just include them on certain models.
I wonder if it's because of 64 bit. -
-
If your computer is an OEM, your product key should be attached to the computer. Call MS, they will validate.
-
best buy ....Not genuine , really weird
maybe u can call Microsoft and check your windows serial number -
Not all systems nag you to do so during setup, however. For example, the _HP DV7 series I just picked up has that utility (which I used pretty soon after finishing setup), but did not nag me to use it during setup.
I would guess that it represents a significant cost savings to the OEMs up front (no CD/DVDs to buy or burn) and probably also cuts down on complaints from end-users that the recovery media were missing (e.g., the doofus at BestBuy who was supposed to "set up" your new computer managed to lose them in the 30 minutes he spent letting Windows run through its setup routine). -
Make sure ur laptop's clock is correct if incorrect ur computer will be not geniune .
-
I personally feel that the OP should return the notebook and let BestBuys deal with it. The more one tries to correct the errors of a brand new machine, the bigger mess one will dig her/himself in.
There is no reason why that BestBuys would not honor the warranty or to please a customer. The license shows "not genuine" from the start is a manufacturer and reseller issue, not the user one.
Recommendations as how to correct the error would put the customer further apart from claiming restitution of a brand new machine and create a "he says-she says" situation of if the delivered license was legitimate at the start.

On my HP it's : Start>All Programs>System Recovery>PC Recovery Disk Creator
The only separate disk I ever received was an optional bonus disk to switch to Vista.
